Virtual Strata Setup Guide
There are three components to running Virtual Strata:
- A Linux PC that is running the backend of the console. This uses Debian 11, and must be on the WheatNet-IP network with a static IP address within the subnet.
- The virtual console front end that the operator will use. This is a Windows application and the PC must be on the WheatNet-IP network with a static IP address within the subnet.
- WheatNet-IP License Server, which validates the license for the console front end. This is also a Windows application; it may be installed on the same PC as the virtual console front end or on another PC on the WNIP network that is always running.
If you are planning to run the console backend on a virtual machine, ensure that you can pass a broadcast UDP message on port 55555 between your VM and the rest of your WNIP network. The console backend must be able to respond to a ping on this UDP port for the console setup GUI to connect to the backend and thus configure the console. We've encountered some corporate environments where this UDP port cannot transverse VLANs. (Or, more accurately: you can make this pass between VLANs, but getting permission to do so is nearly impossible. If that sounds like your network situation, consider running the backend on a PC on the WNIP network instead of a VM, as you will have more administrative control over the machine.)
