Dimension Three (D3) CPU Failure Alarm Troubleshooting

There’s a few possible causes of CPU failover in the D3.  There could be an issue with one of the CPU fans, one of the CPU flash drives, one of the CPU modules itself, or the console motherboard.  In addition, a front panel module, for example, could create a glitch that causes a failover.

The following troubleshooting procedures can be helpful in tracing the issue down

  1. Check the CPU fans with power off to make sure they turn freely, and again with power on to make sure they appear to be turning smoothly, with no apparent bearing noise
  2. It’s possible to swap flash drives and CPUs, but a couple details must be kept in mind
    1. you can swap the flash drives between the two CPUs to see if that has an effect
    2. you can power down a CPU (by unplugging the power cable to one of the CPUs) to see if the combination of CPU, flash, and RAM has an effect
    3. since there is apparently a rather long delay before a failover this type of swap may not be practical to monitor
